Davis Love III stepped onto the first tee at Aerie, surrounded by Hazeltine members ready to experience a more enjoyable, quicker way to play the game they love.
As Davis offered encouragement and guidance, the moment captured something essential about Hazeltine's identity. Aerie serves as the perfect complement to our historic Championship Course for members near and far.
Hazeltine National Golf Club has long been recognized as a stage for Championship Golf, but less known is our deep support of junior golf and commitment to growing the game. From the very beginning, our culture has balanced inclusion with excellence—even as we’ve hosted the world’s most prestigious major championships. That tradition traces back to our founding, when a kids’ course once sat between holes 1 and 9. Today, we’ve come full circle with the opening of Aerie, our new 10-hole short course.
As the short course at Hazeltine began to take shape, berms along the edge of the property gave the impression of a nest. In exploring that imagery, we discovered that the nest of an eagle—a symbol deeply tied to our club’s identity and history—is called an Aerie.
Just as an Aerie nurtures youth, Hazeltine National Golf Club has long championed the growth of the game. Our new short course embodies that same spirit: fostering learning, inclusion, and a love for golf for generations to come.
Following our partnership announcement with Love Golf Design, architect Scot Sherman, Mark Love, and Dru Love transformed our vision into reality. Course design features include undulating greens that reward precise wedge shots, paired with ample short grass and very little rough, allowing for maximum creativity and playability.
Davis’ inaugural round captured what makes Aerie special and served as a milestone in Hazeltine's storied history. He demonstrated the strategic options built into every hole, while also sharing insights from his championship career.
Parents watched as their kids received impromptu lessons from a PGA Champion and Ryder Cup Captain—moments that will undoubtedly remain in those young golfers’ minds for years.
Aerie embodies Hazeltine's evolution while recalling its history. Seasoned players appreciate the strategic challenges hidden within its compact layout, while families discover a welcoming, playable golf environment where three different generations can share a round.
In addition to Aerie, our new putting course has already become a gathering place, bringing members together for friendly competitions and casual practice sessions. With Villas overlooking the course and the Golf Performance Center, Aerie serves as the cornerstone of Hazeltine's Vision 2040—a comprehensive reimagining of the member experience.
Aerie will serve as a place where championship golf meets inclusion, where tradition embraces innovation, and it will bring another dimension to the Hazeltine golf experience.
It also serves as a gentle nod to Totton Heffelfinger’s vision of a short course and being committed to growing the game of golf. In honoring our past, we are ensuring a bright future here at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
