Multiple Honors for Joe Mauer: From Baseball Hall of Famer to U.S. Amateur Championship Co-Chair

Joe Mauer, Minnesota native and three-time American League batting champion, entered baseball history this week. Mauer, Adrián Beltré, and Todd Helton were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Mauer’s induction caps a stellar Major League Baseball career, including six All-Star nominations, three Gold Glove Awards, and one AL MVP Award.

But Mauer isn’t just adept on the diamond. He’s an avid golfer, too. That’s why he received another honor to pair with his Hall of Fame induction: Mauer was named as an honorary co-chair of the 124th U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be played at Hazeltine National Golf Club, in Chaska, Minn., from Aug. 12-18.

Mauer will serve as co-chair alongside 11-time National Football League Pro Bowler Larry Fitzgerald Jr.
. He accepted the role to promote community and connections through golf–and to meet some of the game’s best young players.

“I am humbled to represent the state of Minnesota, the Twin Cities, and Hazeltine National as the honorary chair of the 2024 U.S. Amateur,” said Mauer. “I’m confident Minnesota’s golf fans will join me in welcoming the game’s best amateur players to our home.”

The U.S. Amateur returns to Minnesota for the first time since 2006, when Richie Ramsay defeated John Kelly 4-and-2 to become the first modern-era Scotsman winner. Future champions have lined the fairways and greens at the U.S. Amateur, including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Bobby Jones, and Tiger Woods.

For his part, Mauer appreciates the competitive spirit of young players nearing their prime.

“As someone who has great enthusiasm not only for the game of golf but also for competitive athletics and all the great things that can be learned through sports, I’m thrilled to have a role in this prestigious national championship.”
